We’re loving using more matcha in 2017. Not only is it energizing and full of benefits, but every matcha purchase helps the Gift of Life marrow registry. We discuss Grade A and Ceremonial Matcha all the time, but there’s another member of the Art of Tea matcha family we’ve been neglecting: Ginger Matcha.
Ginger matcha is interesting because it marries the vegetal sweetness of matcha with the spicy and punchy flavors of ginger root. Ginger itself is great for digestion, so we love combining the powerful tummy-soothing effects of ginger with the invigorating energy kick of matcha.
Preparing Ginger Matcha
Preparing ginger matcha doesn’t need to be difficult. In fact, preparing any matcha should be simple. To prepare ginger matcha in the most traditional way, use a whisk and bowl to quickly mix your matcha with hot water. You can also use a closed container, like a bottle or thermos to quickly mix your water and matcha. Simply combine the two ingredients and shake.
The only difference between a Grade A matcha and this spicy-sweet matcha is that our ginger matcha has chunks of delicious ginger in it. Obviously, these pieces of ginger aren’t going to magically become powder or liquid as you whisk or shake, rather they’ll remain solid, flavoring your tea even as you sip it.
We find that a hint of added sweetness makes a ginger matcha unbelievably good. Almond milk and honey are perfect additions to your ginger matcha, too. They’ll add depth to the complex flavors of ginger matcha without letting any one flavor overpower the others. We also like adding other spices to this drink – like turmeric and cinnamon. Drink ginger matcha hot, iced, or as a latte for a unique and tasty treat.
Getting Creative with Ginger Matcha
Like any powdered green tea, ginger matcha is great for cooking. Use ginger matcha in a shortbread cookie recipe for festive green ginger snaps. Add ginger matcha to a green smoothie for a spicy kick. We also love the idea of adding ginger matcha instead of regular matcha to the icing in this ginger donut recipe. Many recipes would only benefit from the addition of scrumptious ginger.
