Today’s the kickoff of our month-long Digital Detox! We’re excited to turn off our devices and find a moment for ourselves every day… even if it’s just for eight minutes. We hope you’re joining us, and if you are, that you’re using your eight minutes wisely! Even though you’re turning off the things that cause the most distractions, it’s still easy to waste your eight minutes. We’ve put together a list of activities that can help you focus and feel calm during your Digital Detox!
If you’re wanting to stay active and engaged in something while your water is boiling or your tea is steeping, there are lots of offline options to choose from. Perhaps try to replicate what you would be doing with your phone. If you usually text, email, or talk on your phone, write a letter to somebody you’ve lost touch with and tell them what makes them a valuable friend. If you find yourself Candy Crushing out of boredom, try to take a quick walk outside or do a yoga movement, like a sun salutation. For those who scroll through social media feeds thinking, staring enviously at people who seem healthier, more adventurous, or happier – remember that comparison is the thief of joy and take a second to appreciate what you have. Write a list of ten things you’re grateful for. Look at your surroundings and pick three things that are beautiful. What makes them beautiful? Taking a moment to enjoy what you have can help promote a positive attitude and boost happiness.
Focusing on the Ritual
Sometimes, the easiest way to find calm is to focus on the task at hand – making tea. We even consider the act of brewing tea to be one of tea’s benefits. When you focus on the task of making tea and you put intention into it, you’ll get that same energy back. Don’t sloppily throw tea into a cup and pop it into the microwave. Put in a kettle and watch the steam rise. If your kettle whistles, listen to the sounds. When you put tea into your cup, look at the dry leaves and smell them. Every part of the tea ritual has sensations. Cluing into those can help you improve mindfulness.
We’ll have even more activity suggestions throughout the month. Stay posted and good luck in your Digital Detox journey!
